A Vital Step for Prince George’s Well-Being

Today, alongside elected officials across British Columbia, we achieved a transformative milestone for Prince George, overturning decades of failed policy. The closure of long-term mental health facilities like Riverview left vulnerable individuals without support, contributing to social disorder, crime, and hopelessness. Recognizing these consequences, City Council has, since the last election, advocated for solutions. Premier David Eby’s announcement of an involuntary care facility directly answers our call. Dr. Barbara Kane’s petition, endorsed by Council, underscored the urgent need to address crime and disorder rooted in untreated mental health challenges.

This facility offers a practical response to the cycles of petty crime, public disturbances, and unsafe streets—often driven by individuals who desperately need specialized care. By providing that care for those in crisis, it will support our police and social workers, restoring safety and order to Prince George.

More than that, this initiative is profoundly compassionate for individuals facing severe mental health struggles and their families. For those trapped by untreated conditions, involuntary care offers a path to recovery or, in rare cases, lifelong support. Families, often left helpless, will gain a resource where loved ones receive dignified, professional care.

However, involuntary detention requires strict oversight to prevent misuse. I will advocate for updating British Columbia’s outdated Mental Health Act. Meanwhile, the urgent needs of vulnerable people, their families, and our community’s safety cannot wait. This facility is a critical step forward.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible.
